چکیده

We model small deviations from linear mechanical behaviour of a loaded vertically suspended helical spring. A Taylor expansion of the elasticity equations governing the axial extension of the spring is used to determine the relative magnitudes of linear and (quadratic and cubic) nonlinear terms in the force–extension relationship. This relationship is the basis for the derivation of a model for the static extension of a loaded spring, and a wave equation thatmodels small amplitude oscillation. Themodels account for the natural decline in pitch angle down a suspended spring, and provide accurate fits tomeasurements of static extension and periods of oscillation that are not adequately represented by equations based on Hooke’s law. The static and dynamic data yield consistent estimates of the spring rate. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cascade unlooping of a low-pitch helical spring under tension

We study the force vs extension behaviour of a helical spring made of a thin torsionally-stiff anisotropic elastic rod. Our focus is on springs of very low helical pitch. For certain parameters of the problem such a spring is found not to unwind when pulled but rather to form hockles that pop-out one by one and lead to a highly non-monotonic force-extension curve. Between abrupt loop pop-outs t...

Wave Motion and Stop-Bands in Pipes with Helical Characteristics Using Wave Finite Element Analysis

Pipes are widely used in many industrial and mechanical applications and devices. Although there are many different constructions according to the specific application and device, these can show helical pattern, such as spiral pipes, wire-reinforced pipes/shells, spring-suspension, and so on. Theoretical modelling of wave propagation provides a prediction about the dynamic behavior, and it is f...

Investigating the Dynamics of a Ball-Spring Autobalancer in a Rotor with Non-Linear Bearings

Although the traditional automatic ball balancer (ABB) has numerous advantages, it has two major deficiencies, i.e., it has a limited balance stable region and it increases the vibration amplitude of the rotor at transient state. These deficiencies limit the applicability of ABBs. In this regard, a new type of ABB called “the Ball-spring autobalancer” has been proposed to resolve the mentioned ...

A mechanical micro molecular mass sensor

One of the bio-sensing mechanisms is mechanical. Rather than measuring shift in resonance frequency, we adopt to measure the change in spring constant due to adsorption, as one of the fundamental sensing mechanism. This study explains  determination of spring constant of a surface functionalized micro machined micro cantilever, which resonates in a trapezoidal cavity-on Silicon wafer, with the ...
